The Society was formed in April 1993

By seven dedicated people to perpetuate the miniature horse in New Zealand.  All had unparalleled knowledge and experience in the breeding and participation in the numerous diverse disciplines of equine sport.

These foundation members were well aware of the high regard in which this country, the New Zealand horse breeders, and the many different equine sporting disciplines were held, throughout the world, and could see New Zealand breeders introducing a unique New Zealand bred miniature horse to the world market.

The aim, to encourage the N.Z. breeder to produce a small horse with all the characteristics, conformation, grace and cadence equal to a full size horse.  The smallest possible, perfect horse.

The two heights for miniature horses – Category A – 34” and under and Category B – over 34” and up to 38” were accepted.  The Society would hold an open registry until such time as considerable numbers of superior small horses were bred, and those horses registered.

Membership with Incorporated Societies of New Zealand was activated, quickly followed by a National Registry, show and activity rules.

The Society has a quality up to date computerized registry, owned by the members, this includes an International section for imported horses and their descendants.

As time went by

It was found breeding numbers and type did not substantiate the closing of the Registry, the quality B section mares were still needed to stamp their distinctive type and trait on the smaller horse.

The Society has been serving miniature horse interests longer than any other in New Zealand.  A forty page bi-monthly newsletter posted nationwide and to Australia, this medium introduces the Society and Committee news, member contributions in a variety of articles and experiences, as well as advertising.
